It sounds like a few transfers didn’t quite pan out on deadline day, which is pretty common in football. Let’s break down what happened with a few of them.
First up, Everton was really trying to find a new forward after selling Beto. They seemed set to sign Folarin Balogun from AS Monaco, even submitting the paperwork before the deadline and having him at the training ground for his medical. But, something came up during that medical, and it caused a hold-up. Everton tried to adjust the payment terms with Monaco, but in the end, Balogun himself apparently got cold feet and backed out of the deal right at the last minute.
Then there’s Lamine Camara. Chelsea had agreed with Monaco to bring him in, seeing him as a replacement for Enzo Fernández. Camara even passed his medical and agreed to a six-year contract. But, when the Balogun deal fell through, Monaco didn’t get the money they were expecting. This meant they had to pull the plug on Camara’s transfer to Chelsea just before the deadline, which apparently left Chelsea pretty unhappy.
Over at Barcelona, they were pushing hard to get Argentine striker Julian Álvarez from Atlético Madrid on deadline day, with Arsenal also showing interest. However, Atlético’s CEO made it clear that they wouldn’t be negotiating with Barcelona for Álvarez at all, shutting down those talks completely.
Another one for Everton involved Kenny Tete. They had an agreement with Fulham to sign him. But Fulham’s own plan to sign a replacement, Andrei Rațiu from Rayo Vallecano, fell apart late in the day. Because they couldn’t get their own signing done, Fulham decided to pull out of the Tete deal. This forced Everton to look elsewhere, and they ended up signing Ainsley Maitland-Niles from Lyon instead.
Finally, there’s Malick Fofana. Sunderland looked like they had him, agreeing on a fee and personal terms with Lyon. But then Crystal Palace jumped in with a bigger bid and even used former Lyon coach Pierre Sage to try and convince Fofana. This late competition led to a bidding war over salary and agent fees, and the whole thing dragged on past the transfer window deadline, so Fofana is still with Lyon for now.
