Chelsea’s search for defensive reinforcements has hit a familiar roadblock. New Blues boss Xabi Alonso is reportedly a huge admirer of Rayo Vallecano’s Pep Chavarría, but a deal for the 28-year-old fullback is looking increasingly unlikely due to the Spanish club’s stubborn transfer stance.
According to sources close to the club, Vallecano has flatly refused to negotiate and is demanding that Chavarría’s €42.4 million release clause be met in full if he is to leave this summer.
While Alonso is keen on bringing Chavarría’s experience and tactical profile to Stamford Bridge, Chelsea’s sporting directors are hesitant. According to them, spending over €40 million on a 28-year-old fullback does not align with the club’s long-term recruitment strategy.
If Rayo Vallecano refuses to budge on their valuation, Chelsea is prepared to pivot. Internal discussions have already begun regarding a move for Arsenal’s highly-rated teenager, Myles Lewis-Skelly which would represent a return to Chelsea’s preferred youth-centric model—offering a high-ceiling development project at a fraction of Chavarría’s cost.
