Cristiano Ronaldo has left the Portugal national team camp. The 41-year-old captain and top international scorer announced his exit after a disagreement that apparently stemmed from the coach’s recent press conference. He then had emergency discussions with officials from the Portuguese Football Federation. Ronaldo shared the news himself on social media, indicating a significant issue within the team and suggesting there’s more to the story that hasn’t been revealed yet.
In an emotional message posted shortly after packing his bags, Ronaldo addressed his decision directly to the Portuguese public:
“After the National Team coach’s press conference, and following a conversation with the President of the Portuguese Football Federation, I have decided to leave the National Team training camp.”
“In due time, I will tell all Portuguese people the truth about the reasons that led to my departure from the national team, to which I have always dedicated myself.”
“Now is the time to wish good luck to Portugal and to all my teammates.”

Things are pretty quiet over at FPF headquarters, but from what’s coming out of the Portuguese press, it sounds like things fell apart after the manager said something during a pre-game press conference. The talk was about Ronaldo’s spot in the starting lineup and how the team rotates players.
Ronaldo leaving now is a really difficult moment in his incredible international career, which spans over 200 games. He’s captained Portugal to wins in Euro 2016 and the Nations League, so his sudden departure is a big shock for the team, especially with important matches coming up.

Ronaldo himself has said he’ll share “the truth” when the time is right. Right now, everyone is waiting to hear what the Portuguese Football Federation and the head coach have to say about one of the most significant managerial clashes we’ve seen in football recently.
