Julian Ward Set to Return as Liverpool Sporting Director

Liverpool FC is nearing the end of a search for a new leader in their executive team.

Reports suggest Julian Ward is the top choice to become the club’s next sporting director.

This 45-year-old Englishman would be taking over from Richard Hughes, stepping into the most senior sporting executive position as the club plans its football operations moving forward.

The selection process, overseen by the club’s ownership, has identified Ward as the leading candidate. He’s expected to manage player recruitment, contract strategies, and the long-term vision for the squad. While the final decision hasn’t been officially announced, the club is reportedly in the final stages of negotiations and internal assessments. Ward is already familiar with how Liverpool operates.

He previously held positions within the club’s recruitment and executive structure, notably stepping into the sporting director role after Michael Edwards left in 2022. This means he understands Fenway Sports Group’s (FSG) approach, which emphasizes data analysis and sustainable practices.

Bringing Ward back into a senior role appears to be a move aimed at ensuring stability and leveraging established expertise within the club’s sporting leadership. This is particularly relevant as Liverpool looks to evolve its squad and manage its transfer dealings strategically.
