Atlético Madrid midfielder Marcos Llorente has officially announced his retirement from international football with the Spanish national team at the age of 31.
Despite still being in his prime years, the versatile Spaniard confirmed that the personal decision was made from the heart after extensive thought.
“I’ve decided to bring my time with the Spanish national team to an end despite I’m aware that I’m still young. It’s a personal decision, one I’ve thought about very carefully and, above all, one that comes from the heart. It has been an honor to represent my country.”
Since making his senior debut for La Roja in November 2020 against the Netherlands, Llorente earned 27 caps for his country. Known for his incredible work rate and multi-positional versatility, he was deployed by multiple managers as a central midfielder, right wing-back, and full-back.
Llorente was included in Luis Enrique’s squad for UEFA Euro 2020 (starting at right-back), as well as the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. He earned a call-up to Spain’s 2026 FIFA World Cup squad, contributing on the pitch during the group stages and knockout rounds.
With his international chapter closed, Llorente will now focus entirely on his club commitments with Atlético Madrid under Diego Simeone, where he remains under contract through June 2027.
